In a Historic Decision, Federal Jury Awards $112 Million for Civil Rights Violations

DOAR is proud to have supported the plaintiffs and their counsel at Winston & Strawn LLP in this significant victory for immigrants whose civil rights and due process protections were violated. DOAR provided trial strategy consulting, witness preparation, jury selection, and trial graphics services on a pro bono basis.

A federal jury in the Eastern District of New York awarded $112 million to hundreds of immigrants who were unlawfully detained by a county sheriff’s department after their bail had been posted or their cases resolved. This unanimous verdict represents an important affirmation of constitutional protections and accountability under the law.

Congratulations to Winston & Strawn Associate Michelle Tuma and Partner Aldo Badini on the successful outcome.
